Elise Harper, a professional photographer, has a sexual appetite that for some of her men brings satisfaction and fulfilment yet for others means disgrace and even death.

A rich, spoilt bitch, Elise is married off by her ambitious, domineering parents to an elderly man of title and wealth. She wished not to lose her virginity in such circumstances and, before her wedding, selected Richard Carradine as a more appropriate first lover.

Their sexual hunger for each other is conducive to bringing them together on a number of occasions for several, steamy extra-marital affairs, despite knowing they are not true soul-mates.

Elise's assistant at her studio, Demis Papahadjopoulos, becomes exceptionally resentful of the male models that Elise rewards sexually, resolutely excluding Demis from such attention thus thwarting his desires. She fires him on the spot when she discovers he is using her studio to make pornographic films. He commences an extreme plan to cause her as much humiliation and degradation as possible.

Richard Carradine, a politician, is inadvertently drawn into this mire just as he is at the peak of his power and popularity. The ensuing publicity results in his resignation. Elise’s client base is also decimated.

Meanwhile, Elise has met a working colleague of her husband, Bryn Crawford. Their professional relationship must be retained for the series of photographs that Bryn has commissioned for his marketing scheme. Elise, along with her replacement assistant, Mike, visit several of the worldwide importers to produce the photographic storyline of the different wines. It is while she is in Australia that Bryn calls her back to be at her husband’s side following his stroke.

As Elise and Mike continue their tour, they arrive eventually at the wine-producing island of Cyprus that is also Demis’s homeland. He abducts Elise, subjecting her to horrors that traumatize her, blocking her memory of the events entirely.

Bryn and Richard are instrumental in her rescue.

Elise’s mother then takes control and has her own ideas about Elise’s future. Elise is unable to return to Cambridge until after the death of her mother.

Things have materially changed from how she remembers them.

Elise discovers the truth of her rescue from a lady journalist whose previous acquaintance with Bryn draws her into the investigation.

Elise and Bryn are reunited and prepare to settle down for the happily ever after.

It does not work out that way.
